What is LiDAR?
What is it and why has Toyota Advanced Logistics chosen this technology to use with the recently released AGV ride-on pallet jacks and core tow tractors? LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging. While this technology is not new, the way in which it is being used and explored is changing and evolving. Currently LiDAR is used in many devices and places you may not even know. Your cell phone, for example, uses LiDAR to focus and find objects & faces while taking pictures. LiDAR is also used for docking ships on the NASA International Space Station, so you could say LiDAR is a trusted system indeed.
By using LiDAR and an Advanced Mapping system, Toyota’s AGV’s can operate driverless, with accuracy within half of an inch! How is that possible? The LiDAR and Mapping system used by Toyota Advanced Logistics compiles a 3D model of your facility by pulsing infrared light out and awaits the return speed of light to determine depth from motion, giving the AGV’s 360 degree vision at any given time. The Toyota Core Tow Tractor and the Center- Controlled Rider then adjust speed when obstacles are presented.
